How to Rotate PDF Pages

PDFZippy Blog · October 2026 · 5 min read

People reviewing printed documents, one page held at an angle

You open a scanned PDF and the first page is lying on its side. You tilt your head, then tilt your laptop, then give up and read it sideways. A sideways page is one of the most common PDF annoyances — and one of the easiest to fix permanently. Here is how to rotate PDF pages so the file stays upright for everyone who opens it.

Why PDF pages end up sideways

Most sideways pages start life as paper. Someone feeds a document into a scanner upside down, photographs a receipt in portrait mode, or scans a stack of mixed pages in one pass. The scanner faithfully captures whatever orientation the paper was in, and the resulting PDF preserves it. Mixed documents are the worst offenders: a contract scanned in one batch can come out with page one upright, page two rotated 90 degrees, and page three completely upside down.

Digital files can go sideways too. Exporting a spreadsheet with a wide landscape table, or saving a presentation slide as a PDF, sometimes produces pages whose orientation does not match the rest of the document. And occasionally the file itself is fine — it is the viewer that is misleading you, as explained below.

Step 1: Work out which pages are actually wrong

Before rotating anything, scroll through the whole document and note which pages are sideways and in which direction. It is tempting to rotate the entire file, but that fixes one page and breaks all the upright ones. A two-minute scan of the document saves you from rotating, re-rotating, and wondering why page seven is now upside down.

Pay attention to direction as well as angle. A page can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, 90 degrees anticlockwise, or a full 180 degrees (upside down). Each needs a different fix, so jot down the page numbers: for example, pages 2 and 5 need a clockwise turn, page 8 is upside down.

Step 2: Rotate the pages in your browser

  1. Open PDFZippy's Rotate PDF tool.
  2. Drop in your PDF — the file never leaves your device, so even private scans stay private.
  3. Select the pages that need turning, and rotate each one until it reads upright.
  4. Download the corrected file and open it to confirm every page is the right way up.

That last check matters. Rotation is a one-click fix, but it is easy to turn a page the wrong way — especially an upside-down page, which can look plausible at a glance in a small preview. Open the downloaded file at full size and scroll through it once before sending it on.

Rotate one page, several pages, or the whole file

Rotation is not all-or-nothing. If only the scanned receipt on page three is sideways, rotate just that page and leave the rest untouched. If a whole batch of scans came out sideways — say, every page of a booklet scanned in landscape — select all the pages and rotate them together. And if a document mixes orientations, handle each group separately: first the clockwise pages, then the upside-down ones. Working in groups like this is much faster than fixing pages one at a time.

If you later need to reorder the corrected pages, the Organize PDF tool lets you drag pages into a new order, and Split PDF can pull the fixed pages out into a separate file.

Viewer rotation is not the same as a saved fix

Here is the trap most people fall into. Almost every PDF viewer has a rotate button, and pressing it makes the page look upright — but only in that viewer, only until you close the file. The file itself is unchanged, so the next person who opens it sees the sideways page all over again, and so do you if you open it in a different app.

Some viewers go further and silently auto-rotate pages for display. That is why a PDF can look perfectly fine on your computer and sideways on a colleague's phone: one viewer is compensating for the file's stored orientation and the other is not. The only reliable fix is to rotate the pages and save a new copy of the file. Once the orientation is stored in the PDF itself, it displays upright everywhere — on any device, in any viewer, and in print.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Open the file in PDFZippy's Rotate PDF tool, select only the page that is sideways, rotate it 90 degrees in the right direction, and download the file. The other pages stay exactly as they were.

Will rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Rotating a page only changes its orientation setting — the text and images are not re-encoded — so quality stays exactly the same.

Why does my PDF look fine on my computer but sideways on someone else's?

Some viewers auto-rotate pages for display without changing the file itself, so the same PDF can look upright in one app and sideways in another. Saving a properly rotated copy fixes it everywhere.

Can I rotate a scanned PDF?

Yes. Scanned pages rotate just like any other page. If the scan is also hard to read or not searchable, run it through an OCR tool after rotating it.
