How to Add a Watermark to a PDF

A watermark is the quiet stamp across a PDF page that speaks before anyone reads a word. DRAFT says "this is not final, don't act on it yet." CONFIDENTIAL says "this is not for everyone." And a company name or SAMPLE stamp marks a document as yours the moment it leaves your hands. The good news is you don't need Acrobat or any installed software to add one — you can stamp a PDF in your browser, free, and keep the file on your own device the whole time.
Add a watermark in six steps
- Open PDFZippy's Add Watermark tool and drop your PDF onto the page.
- Type your watermark text, or use DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL — both are ready to stamp as-is.
- Pick the placement: a large diagonal stamp across the page, or a horizontal one if you prefer something quieter.
- Set the opacity. Light transparency is the sweet spot for most documents: visible at a glance, but it never fights with the text underneath.
- Preview the result before applying, and check that the stamp looks right on a dense page as well as an empty one.
- Apply it to all pages and download the stamped PDF. Your original file stays untouched on your device.
That is the whole process. There is no account, no upload, and no waiting — the stamping happens in your browser, which matters most exactly when the document is confidential enough to deserve a watermark in the first place.
DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL — which stamp fits?
The two classic stamps solve different problems, and picking the wrong one sends the wrong message. Use DRAFT when the document itself is unfinished: a contract still under negotiation, a report awaiting sign-off, a design that may change. It tells every reader, including future you, not to treat this version as final — and it protects you if an early version leaks, because nobody can mistake it for the agreed copy.
Use CONFIDENTIAL when the document is final but its audience is not everyone: salary details, unreleased pricing, a client's private data. The stamp does not lock the file — for that, pair it with a password via PDFZippy's Protect PDF tool — but it removes any excuse for "I didn't know this was private." A reader who forwards a page stamped CONFIDENTIAL knows exactly what they are doing.
When a document is both unfinished and sensitive, stamp the one that matters more to the reader holding it. For a draft circulating inside your own team, DRAFT usually wins. For a near-final version going outside the company, CONFIDENTIAL wins.
Make it readable: opacity and placement
A watermark that hides the text has failed at its job. Three choices decide whether yours helps or hurts readability:
- Opacity first. Start light and only darken it if the stamp disappears on busy pages. The text underneath must stay readable at a normal reading distance — if you have to squint past the stamp, it is too strong.
- Go diagonal for documents that travel. A large diagonal watermark is harder to crop out than a small corner mark, which is exactly why drafts and samples use it. A corner stamp is easy to trim away with a screenshot or a crop; a diagonal one is not.
- Stay horizontal for formal documents. On a contract or an official letter, a horizontal stamp across the middle of the page reads as deliberate rather than alarming, and it interferes less with tables and signatures.
One habit worth building: preview before you download, and check a text-heavy page, not just the cover. A watermark that looks perfect on a title page can turn a dense table into a mess. If it does, lighten the opacity rather than shrinking the stamp — a small, dark stamp is both harder to read past and easier to crop out.
Custom text: beyond the two classics
DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL cover most cases, but custom text covers the rest. A company name across every page marks ownership on samples and portfolios. SAMPLE on a preview tells a client they are looking at a preview, not the deliverable. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE fits internal memos that are final but not for forwarding. A date — "DRAFT — November 2026" — is quietly powerful: when three versions of the same document are floating around, the dated one is the one people trust.
Keep custom stamps short. Two or three words read instantly; a full sentence becomes wallpaper that readers stop noticing. If you need more explanation than a stamp can carry, put it in the document itself and keep the stamp as the headline.
Changed your mind? Start from the original
One honest limitation: once a watermark is stamped, it becomes part of the PDF. There is no undo button inside the stamped file, and no clean way to peel the stamp off without damaging the page underneath. That is actually the point — a watermark that anyone could remove would be worthless.
So keep your original, unstamped PDF. Want different wording, a lighter stamp, or no stamp at all? Go back to the original and stamp a fresh copy. Never stamp an already-stamped file: layered watermarks stack into a grey fog that ruins readability and looks unprofessional. One clean stamp on a clean original, every time.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add a DRAFT watermark to a PDF?
Open PDFZippy's Add Watermark tool, drop in your PDF, type DRAFT, pick a large diagonal style with light transparency, apply it to all pages, and download the stamped file. The whole thing runs in your browser — your file is never uploaded.
Will a watermark make my PDF hard to read?
Not if you set the opacity right. A light, semi-transparent watermark sits behind the text so the document stays fully readable while the stamp stays visible. Preview the result before downloading and lighten it if it competes with the text.
Can I use my own wording instead of DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes. The tool accepts custom text, so you can stamp a company name, SAMPLE, DO NOT DISTRIBUTE, a date, or anything else that fits your document.
Can I remove a watermark after stamping it?
A stamped watermark becomes part of the PDF, so there is no undo inside the stamped file. Keep your original unstamped PDF: if you want different wording, stamp a fresh copy from the original.
